Viktor Papanek Workshop.

2019

Instructional poster for a 5-day workshop on VIKTOR PAPANEK.

Disciplines: Poster F4, workshop development/coordination
Organiser: BASEL SCHOOL OF DESIGN — Higher Education Programme in Visual Design,
Teaching staff in charge: ANNE-CHRISTINE KRÄMER & HANS KRENN
Head go the Printing workshop: MARCEL MAYER

The instruction poster containing all the details about the workshop: Date and venue of the event, topic and aim of the project.

The letterpress/woodblock printing process allows for very few half-tones: we work in black and white and subsequently print the various stages of the printing plate in colour. The visual magic arises from the overprinting: the challenge lies in anticipating and planning this overprinting situation in advance.

Task & results

Dear students,
We hereby commission you to design the poster for the Viktor Papanek exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum within the next few days and to produce a small run of at least seven copies.

Please accept our apologies for the fact that there is no electricity available at the moment. However, we believe that you will be able to produce the poster for the museum even without your beloved computers. Our print workshop will be available to you 24 hours a day throughout the coming week. In addition, we will provide you with a three-ply wooden panel in world format and tools for working with the wood, including all the printing supplies and paper required for the print run

We realise that, due to the circumstances we have set, your print results will not be comparable to a standard poster print run. Having to work in this emergency situation without electricity presents a unique challenge for you, which we will, of course, take into account in your assessment.

We wish you every success and hope you enjoy your work, and we hope that Viktor Papanek has provided you with plenty of inspiration for the days ahead.

No visuals or photographs will be provided for the design of the poster. You will develop your own visual language. The following text elements are to be incorporated into the poster: Victor Papanek — The Politics of Design, 29 September 2018 – 10 March 2019, Vitra Design Museum

Background to the assignment: Viktor Papanek is regarded as the inventor of social design; his work as a designer, design theorist and communicator of his design ideas is groundbreaking and is only now being discovered by a wider audience. His unconventional solutions to the issues of his time were, and still are, visionary.

I hope that your posters will win my heart!
